Football returned to the Hyundai stadium as Mandurah City played host to Morley Windmills in round three of the All Flags State League Division 1.

After last week’s bye, Mandurah looked like they had already started eating the Easter eggs as Morley started the game strongly. After only six minutes, Gavin Brady almost put the visitors ahead when his shot from just outside the box just went past the box. This should have woken Mandurah up, but on thirteen minutes, some poor defensive work allowed Tony Vinci through and after his initial shot was saved by Phil Straker, he followed up the rebound and slotted the ball home.

This goal woke Mandurah up and Rafa should have levelled the scores when a clearance by Morley’s goalkeeper was blocked by Rafa Insauradale, but the rebound hit the cross bar, before Insauradale pushed the resulting ball just wide of the post.

This gave Mandurah some confidence and Jeff Bright broke away down the right hand side and his powerful shot was only parried away by the goal keeper and Danny Dyson placed the ball into the empty net for the equaliser.

By now, Jeff Bright was causing the Morley defence all sorts of problems and on 37 minutes, he again broke through but his shot just went past the post.

With Half time approaching, a Monty Grigo corner was well saved from Stevie Grant in the Morley goal.

The second half was only 30 seconds old, when Grigo picked the ball and from just outside the box, his shot hit the right hand post. The rebound went to Morley, who played a long ball over the Mandurah defence, but Vinci found his shot save by Straker in the Mandurah goal.

Dyson then had the chance to score his second goal of the afternoon, but he just missed connecting another Bright cross.

In the 6th minute, Grigo again collected the ball, beat one man and from 25 meters out curled the ball into the top right hand corner for Mandurah’s second and a goal of the season contender.

Insauradale should have made it 3 to Mandurah, but his shot from 10 meters out went wide of the post. This was Insauradale last action of the day as he was subbed and replaced by Craig Tome.

In the 64th minute, Matt Stares scored his first goal of his Mandurah career, after a corner from Jeff Bright resulted in a goal mouth scramble. Stares poked the ball home, much to the delight of the majority of the 250 spectators.

By now, Morley looked very tired and in the 70th minutes, a penalty was awarded to Mandurah after Bright was brought down in the box. Darren Broxton slotted the penalty home, only to have to be told to take it again. Broxton decided to put the ball in the same spot, but Grant saved this attempt.

With the game coming to a close, Mandurah coach replaced Dyson with Tom Straker and Robbie Hamm for Grigo. The latter was an inspired substitution as Hamm was on the end of a Tome cross to make it 4-1 to Mandurah and keep the 100% record start of the season.

Jeff Bright was named man of the match which was a unanimous choice by all.

Earlier in the day, the Under 18’s beat Morley 1-0 and the reserves won 3-1.

Mandurah City’s next home game is on Saturday 21st April, when they play Shamrock Rovers with a 6pm kick off.

Division One Champions and newly-promoted Bunbury Forum Force got their 2012 Night Series campaign off to a perfect start with a 4-1 win over Mandurah City at Dalmatinac Park on Saturday evening.

Led by former ECU Joondalup defender Ollie McGee, the Force looked far from overwhelmed in their first outing as a Premier League side.

Just 12 months ago, it was keeper Ryan Montgomery’s heroics that salvaged a point against Mandurah in the opening round of the Night Series. But this time it was the Force calling the shots, with the likes of Ashley Young, Martin Ryan and Jon Brooks proving a handful for the Dolphins.

Force coach Nigel Wilcox was happy with his side’s first hit out of the season and is hoping to progress to the second stage with a bit of luck.

“We’ve been working hard for the last four or five weeks and it was a good performance,” he said.

“We wanted to get the game done and dusted in the opening 15 minutes of the second half and everything went to plan.”

Wilcox admitted preparations for this season had come together a lot better than this time last year.

“We were a bit under done last season and we had to play a lot of young players,” Wilcox said.

“But this year we wanted to put the best possible team that we could and progress past this first round.”

All eyes were on Force signing Steve Howson, and after a quiet first half the Englishman delivered with a quality finish to put the game out of Mandurah’s reach.

Wilcox is expected big things from the bustling centre forward during the upcoming All Flags State Premier League season.

“He’s played at a good level in England and he’s going to be a big asset for us,” he said.

It was Mandurah who were busy early in the match, making the most of the windy conditions.

Montgomery was called into action when City midfielder Jeff Bright found some space on the left hand side, only a fingertip save from the gloveman prevented any damage on the scoresheet.

Against the run of play, Ryan was brought down in the box by Mandurah keeper Phil Straker – leaving Young to take the spot kick.

The classy striker made no mistake, coolly slotting the ball past an outstretched Straker to give Bunbury a 1-0 advantage after the opening 15 minutes.

Leading 1-0 at the break, the Force went up a gear with three goals in 13 minutes to blow the game apart.

Brooks, Howson and Ryan all put their names on an ever growing Bunbury scoresheet to get Bunbury’s first ever Night Series win.

Darren Broxton scored a consellation goal for Mandurah after a goalmouth scramble on the hour mark, but it was too little too late as the yellow-and-blacks ran out easy victors.

Bunbury Forum Force: 1. Ryan MONTGOMERY, 2. Mark OSMOND 3. Corey UTTERSON, 4. Ollie MCGEE, 5. Jamie TANDY, 7. Kieran QUINN, 8. Ashley YOUNG, 10. Steve HOWSON, 11. Jon BROOKS, 12. Martin RYAN (17. Leigh STEWARD 78′), 14. Danny CAIN (16. Michael FARMER 78′)

Substitutes not used: RGK. Shane RUSSELL

Mandurah City: 1. Phil STRAKER, 2. Michael GRIGO (8. Dan MACALAN 83′), 3. Matt AKERMAN (10. Victor INSAURALDE 83′), 4. Tom STRAKER, 5. Jay BOWSER, 7. Darren BROXTON, 11. Jeff BRIGHT, 12. Ryan TOWNSEND, 13. Zac NEWTON (9. Danny DYSON 83′), 14. Papa HPARTAR, 15. Matt STARES
